Constructed in 1809 by John McGarey, our Federal-style building originally functioned as a tavern, serving travelers and locals at the crossroads in the center of Thompsontown. It operated in this role until 1840, and during that period at least part of the building housed the town’s first post office, making it an early civic and commercial center for the community.

After Mr. McGarey’s death, the structure was converted into a private residence. In later years, it was divided into two rentals.

In 1984, a local artist and his wife purchased and renovated the building. Under their stewardship, it became a fine art gallery and publishing company, reintroducing the historic structure as a cultural destination. Following this period, the building briefly served as a church, after which it was adapted for use as a law firm.

For more than two centuries, McGarey’s tavern has remained a distinctive and enduring landmark in Thompsontown.
